Mesh chairs are fine for task seating, but they don't look or feel like upholstery.   1. What environment will the product live in? Rain, wind, snow, and dirt point to fabric. Heat and humidity point to mesh.
  2. How long should the component last? Wovens generally survive abrasion better than open mesh.
  3. How much airflow does the user need? If the answer is 'a lot,' plan for mesh or perforated panels.
  4. How will the item be cleaned? Upholstery with a twill face is easier to vacuum and spray-clean than open mesh that catches crumbs.
  5. Is there a test standard? If your spec calls for Martindale or Wyzenbeek abrasion, you'll want a tight woven.

If you're in the first scenario, I recommend a woven fabric. If you're in the second, mesh. If you're in the third, a woven with a performance finish. And if you're not sure, order sample yardage and test it—don't rely on a mental chart.
