If your garment will face boulders, tree bark, machine guards, or -20°C nights, start with nylon... but don't stop there.

That's why most serious performance fabrics are blends. In practice, a 60/40 nylon/polyester split gives you abrasion resistance and faster drying. Schoeller's Dryskin uses a three-dimensional knit structure that creates moisture channels, so sweat moves away from the skin and spreads over a larger area to evaporate. That's not something you can get from a cheap plain weave. Add a nanosphere finish, and you get water-repellent behavior without the old C8 chemistry.

From a cost perspective, Schoeller isn't cheap. I've had designers turn pale at the yard price. But when I calculate TCO over a 3-year lifecycle, the expensive fabric often wins:

Digital printing has changed the game for small runs. You can do 50 pieces with unique artwork and not pay for screens. But — and this is the catch — the cheapest greige fabric isn't automatically the cheapest printed fabric.

For digital textile fabric printing, you also have to match the ink to the fiber. Disperse dyes for polyester, acid dyes for nylon, reactive dyes for cotton. If you pick suboptimal fabric, you may need extra pre-treatment, post-heat-setting, or a silicone-coated transfer paper to control ink bleed.

I learned this with a 'bargain' polyester mesh. We sent it to the printer and the first batch looked like a watercolor disaster. The ink migrated because the mesh had no proper coating. We re-ran the batch — $1,200 gone. The original quote for that mesh was $2.10/yard. After the failed print, re-run costs, and rush shipping, every usable yard cost us $4.60. It was no longer a bargain; it was the most expensive mesh we bought that quarter.

Now, about that search for 'mesh fabric Joann': Yes, you can buy mesh at craft stores. I've picked up Joann mesh for quick prototypes. But their rolls have variable porosity, and the price per yard is way above wholesale. For sampling, fine. For production, build a proper supply chain.

So in this bucket, compare the total cost of getting a finished printed yard in your hand, not the fiber cost alone. Include strike-offs, color matching, pre-treatment, and waste.

Scenario C — Sustainability-Driven Brands

If your story is 'recycled' and 'certified,' the nylon vs polyester question gets more layered.

Recycled polyester (rPET) is mature — plenty of GRS-certified options. Recycled nylon is still a smaller market: pricier, longer lead times, and often big minimums. In our 2024 sourcing event, only three of twelve mills could even offer a GRS-certified recycled nylon, and their MOQs started at 3,000 yards. That's manageable for a big brand, but suffocating for a startup.

But I've seen brands jump on a 'recycled' fabric with zero third-party certification. That's not a fabric problem; it's a brand-risk problem. If you're making green claims, you need the docs. Bluesign®, GRS, Oeko-Tex® — whatever your standard, put it in the spec and check the certificates.

Schoeller's Ecorepel® and recycled options are genuinely strong here. And the TCO includes your brand's credibility. It's hard to put a dollar value on not being called out for greenwashing, but you can bet it's more than the fabric saving.

One surprise from my experience: the biggest pushback from retail buyers wasn't the sustainable fabric price. It was missing documentation. They wanted proof, not promises. So budget for testing and certification — it's part of the total cost.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

Use this quick diagnostic:

  • Is the product going through 100+ washes, extreme weather, or physical abuse? → Scenario A.
  • Is the collection seasonal, fast-moving, and printed in short runs? → Scenario B.
  • Does your packaging say 'recycled' or your pitch mention circularity? → Scenario C.

If you're a bit of both (a 'sustainable outdoor' brand), start with A for structure, add C for finishing, and compare TCO side by side.

One last thing: I track every fabric comparison in a spreadsheet with these lines:

  • Unit price
  • Shipping, duties, and handling
  • Pre-treatment, coating, and finishing
  • Printing or dyeing costs
  • Fabric loss in cutting
  • Testing and certification
  • Warranty / return risk
  • Brand fit
