Whenever the word Schoeller comes up in a product review, someone asks whether I mean the photographer. I don't. The Swiss textile company and the portrait photographer Martin Schoeller are not the same organization. That distinction matters because a Martin Schoeller lighting setup is good for revealing the texture of human skin and bad for approving the color of a textile.
I'm a quality and compliance manager at a textile company. I review roughly 200 unique fabric submissions each year. In our Q1 2024 audit, 8% of first deliveries were rejected before production because the physical sample didn't match the specification we had agreed on. The fabric wasn't always bad. The selection brief was too generic.
It took me around four years of doing this to understand that there is no universal answer to the question, which fabric should we use? There are only categories of problems. The more precisely you name the problem, the more useful the fabric choice becomes.
Three situations that look similar but are not
If your search touched the technical side of Schoeller Coldblack, or you're trying to decide whether a mesh embroidered fabric can do a job, or someone has asked which fabric is viscose, you are not looking for one recommendation. You are in one of three different situations.
- A dark garment that will sit in strong sun. This is where Schoeller Coldblack is a serious option.
- A design that needs visible texture, a logo, or a pattern, but still needs air to move through the fabric. This is where a mesh embroidered fabric deserves close attention.
- A material identification problem. Your team, customer, or supplier needs to understand which fabric is viscose and what viscose can and cannot do.
Each one has a different answer. Let me walk through them.
Scenario 1: Dark performance fabric and Schoeller Coldblack
Schoeller is a mill, not a single material. If you see Schoeller as a requirement without a product line, you haven't finished the brief. Ask what the product will do, where it will be worn, and which failure the customer fears most.
If the real problem is heat buildup in a dark textile under sunlight, then Schoeller Coldblack is the specific technology I look at. According to Schoeller's published product information, Coldblack is a finish designed to reflect solar radiation on darker textiles. It is a finish, not a fiber composition. The base fabric underneath still determines breathability, stretch, and hand feel.
Before you write a spec, understand the limit: Coldblack is not air conditioning. In extreme heat, the wearer will still feel warm. What it can do is reduce heat gain that makes a black jacket feel like a heating pad at noon.
Also include the testing context in the spec. Every finish has durability limits. I've seen teams approve a Coldblack shell based on a flat swatch and then become disappointed after 20 washes. Ask the mill for finishing recommendations and test the finished fabric after the final laundry cycle. That is why I usually request a larger first-article sample rather than a tiny swatch cut from a lab roll.
One inspection note before moving on. Do not judge the final color under a Martin Schoeller lighting setup. That portrait lighting technique is designed to emphasize faces and surfaces. For a color decision, use a neutral daylight light source. A fabric can look dramatic or dirty depending on the light; neither is a reliable specification.
Scenario 2: Dimensional design and mesh embroidered fabric
Mesh embroidered fabric is a common way to add a dimensional logo or decorative structure to athletic wear, caps, overlays, and shoe uppers. The idea is simple: embroidered thread sits on a mesh base. The result looks technical and raised.
Here's the catch that quality inspections keep finding. Once you cover a mesh with embroidery, the covered area is no longer open. If the design covers 90% of the panel, you've built a solid piece of embroidery with a little airflow around the edges, not a ventilated panel.
If the product really needs breathability, think about the ratio of open mesh to covered mesh. Keep dense stitching away from high-heat zones, or move the main air channels to areas that remain unembroidered.
The second catch is stretch and recovery. The base mesh may stretch in two directions. Embroidery thread usually does not. If the product has to recover its shape around elbows, knees, hats, or cuffs, specify a stretch test before approving the embroidery layout.
Here's a specific memory. In 2022, we received a first-article sample for a 12,000-cap order with a small mesh embroidered fabric back panel. The logo looked clean. After a wash and stretch cycle, the embroidery distorted the mesh openings. The supplier said that was normal. We rejected the sample and added a simple recovery requirement to the contract. Looking back, I should have required that test before placing the order. At the time, everyone assumed mesh embroidery would behave like the base mesh. It doesn't.
Scenario 3: Which fabric is viscose?
The most common material question I get from non-textile teammates is which fabric is viscose? The simple answer is this: viscose is a regenerated cellulose fiber. Wood pulp is dissolved, processed, and spun into a filament that is made into yarn and then fabric. In the United States, the same family is often called rayon.
If someone is trying to identify viscose by feeling a rack of garments, the easiest clue is not softness. Viscose can feel smooth, fluid, and slightly cooler to the touch than cotton. It drapes beautifully, which is why you find it in blouses, dresses, and lined garments. But it does not behave like cotton in the wash. Viscose can shrink, and its strength is lower when wet. Lyocell and modal are related fibers, but they are not the same as regular viscose.
If a customer asks which fabric is viscose, they often mean, why is this garment so soft? Don't answer with one adjective. Show the difference.
I keep a small training kit for material teams. Cotton, viscose, and polyester swatches sit inside an 8.5x11 acrylic sign holder, with a clear label on each one. The holder looks like an office display item, but it makes people touch the fabric and ask better questions. When someone can feel that viscose moves and drapes but also wrinkles and loses strength when wet, they stop expecting it to perform like polyester.
I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining fiber families than deal with a launch rejection later. Informed customers make faster decisions. They also ask sharper questions about care, durability, and supply chain. That makes my job easier, not harder.
How to tell which scenario you're in
If you're still not sure, use the worst case for the product to decide.
- If the worst case is sun and heat, and the design is already dark, ask about Schoeller Coldblack. If the worst case is cold and rain, a coldblack finish will not solve a membrane or seam choice.
- If the worst case is a logo that needs to move with the body, test a mesh embroidered fabric for stretch, recovery, and wash distortion. If the logo is decorative and sits on a protected panel, the embroidery can be bolder.
- If the worst case is a return because a customer thought viscose was cotton or polyester, answer the question of which fabric is viscose with labels and physical comparisons before the product reaches them.
Most unsuccessful first articles I see are not caused by bad fibers. They are caused by asking one fabric to solve a problem it was never specified for. That is why I always start by naming the problem before choosing a material. Schoeller Coldblack, mesh embroidered fabric, and viscose are all useful when they match the situation. When they don't, no amount of clever branding changes the result.
